Career Overview: Preamble

Vaal Skills Training Institute ‘School of Health Studies’ was founded as a Health and Science Institution situated in Durban city centre. With an intention to provide and promote education in Health Sector to disadvantaged communities.
With an aim to initiate, develop and uplift life skills in local and rural communities affected by non-existence of a Government Health skills initiative to improve by empowering the communities with the health skills through educating them.

Vaal Skills Training Institute endeavours to provide Education to the Heath Promotion Officers to equip them with the required skills to empower the communities alleviate their Heath by preventive measures so that some of the health problems are avoided.
Vaal Skills School achieves this by providing relevant learning programmes to the learners.

A Health Promotion Officer course equips individuals with the skills and knowledge to promote health and well-being within communities. This course is typically a one-year program, covering a mix of theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and workplace experience. Upon completion, graduates can work in various settings like government health departments, non-profits, and community health centres

Duties of Health Promotion Officer:

  • Treat simple diseases, injuries, wounds and refer to the clinic
  • Provide basic nursing care
  • Provide palliative care
  • Take temperature, BP, Pulse and respiration
  • Identify and assess outbreak of transmitted diseases, teach and refer for treatment
  • Identify Sexual Transmitted Infections, teach and refer for treatment
  • Identify children who are not immunised and refer for immunization
  • Identify and assess pregnant mothers, mother who have given birth and their babies and refer for treatment
  • HIV and AIDS testing and counselling
  • Identify drug and substance abusers and refer them to rehabilitation centres
  • Teach people about dangers of drug and substance abuse
  • Teach about women and men’s health
  • Teach about child’s health
  • Teach about health life styles

How do Health Promotion Officers fit in health sector?

Health Promotion Officer is a profession that bridges the gap between communities and health institutions (Clinics, rehabilitation centres, testing and counselling centres etc) as such they form greater part of primary health care re-engineering teams which is currently being rolled out by Department of Health throughout South Africa.

Practical (simulations) Skills Modules

  • Mobilise community to address community health issues, NQF Level 3, 4 Credits (40hours).
  • Identify the service needs and ease of access to health and social services, NQF Level 3, 4 Credits (40 hours).
  • Promote healthy life styles and mental wellbeing, NQF Level 3, 6 Credits (60 hours).
  • Promote HIV prevention including HIV testing, condom use, partner reduction, circumcision, STI treatment, NQF Level 3, 4 Credits (40 hours).
  • Provide information on prevention of accidents and incidents in homes, NQF Level 2, 4 Credits (40hours).
  • Record and report on information provided to individuals, households and communities, NQF Level 3, 4 Credits (40 hours).
  • Promote child health, NQF Level 4, 4 Credits (40 hours).
  • Support community members with psychosocial problems, NQF Level 4, 3 Credits (30 hours).
  • Identify and treat a select number of minor ailments, NQF Level 2, 8 Credits (80 hours).
  • Provide basic support to people who are unable to care for themselves, NQF Level 2, 4 Credits (40 hours).
  • Promote and provide support for maternal and women’s health, NQF Level 2,14 Credits (140hours).

Total Credits for Practical Skills Modules: 63.

Work Experience Modules:

i. Operation and dynamics of communities, NQF Level 4, 6 Credits (60 hours).
ii. Household registration and assessment processes, NQF Level 3, 14 Credits (140 hours).
iii. Health promotion processes, NQF Level 3, 6 Credits (60 hours).
iv. Formal health provision processes, NQF Level 2, 12 Credits (120 hours).
v. Emotional and social wellness support processes, NQF Level 3, 6 Credits (60 hours).
vi. Household treatment processes of minor ailments, NQF Level 3, 16 Credits (160 hours).

Total Credits for Work Experience Modules: 60.

ASSESSMENT

Learners are formatively assessed on the basis of assignments, an individual and group project and as well as short test. Assignments, case studies, problem-solving techniques will assist with formative assessment. Learners will also be formatively assessed in real work environment on the basis of observation in natural setting; unobtrusive or planned. Behaviour and performance will be evaluated.
Upon completion of the training learners will be issued with a statement of results by the college which will allow them to sit for national examination.

NB: National examinations are written in June and October/November every year.

CERTIFICATION

Learners who pass National Examination will be awarded Occupational Qualification Certificate: Health Promotion Officer by (QCTO).

Learners are attached not limited to the following organisations Clinics, Rehabilitation centres, Testing and Counselling centres, cancer foundation, Hospices, Mental health centres, old age homes, Local municipalities, water purification plants, Health research centres, Primary and Secondary schools, NGOs etc
